The Transience of Light

Tutor: Kenneth le Riche. Oil painting

  • Starts 29 Jul
  • 500 British pounds
  • Old Moss Road

Course Information

Taking inspiration from the landscape around Ullapool, students will work on two main paintings during the course of the week: a morning painting and an afternoon painting. Each will be on an A1 panel and while looking at different approaches to painting, students will consider the nuances of perception as light and mood change.    Using brushes, rags, sandpaper, palette knives and fingers as tools, students will work on drawings and studies which will form the basis of these two larger and more resolved paintings on panel.     Demonstrations will explore the nature and qualities of oil paint and mediums such as linseed oil, turpentine, stand oil, encaustic, damar varnish and liquin to accelerate the oils drying process.    Throughout the week students will be encouraged to look at ways of analysing and modifying their work; observing space, abstraction, colour and texture to create a sense of atmosphere and expression. In doing so, students will develop skills in visual perception and expressive improvisation to find and build their own visual language. There will be brief slide lectures and group critiques. This course is suitable for all levels and will give a greater understanding of working with oil paint.
