Course Information
“Books work from the inside out. They are a private conversation happening somewhere in the soul.” Nan Shepherd, The Living Mountain. The concertina or accordion book is one of the oldest book structures, developed from the scroll. Its mountains and valleys, creases and folds hold parallels to landscape and the natural forms found within it, bringing a sense of journey and continuity. This course will focus on the concertina structure in all its surprisingly diverse forms, using content informed by the landscape surrounding Bridge House Art. The vastness of the mountains in the distance, the movement of the river from source to sea, along with the wildlife and plants bring a rich narrative that is well suited to this book form. Students will be encouraged to develop their own personal journey using drawing, printmaking, and mixed media and explore the different ways the concertina structure can enhance the content. We will consider the work of Hedi Kyle, Helen Douglas, Jane Hyslop, Karen Kunc and David Faithfull. This course is suited to beginners or those with some experience in bookbinding that would like to develop content.
