Creating a Living Line within a Scroll
Tutor: Lucy May Schofield. e-maki mono using print, mark-marking and paper dyeing
Course Information
Over the course of five unique days, you will create a drawing, or series of images to be bound into an e-maki mono (Japanese picture scroll). Using various print, mark-marking and paper dyeing techniques, you are invited to create a series of images designed to be viewed in a long hand scroll format. You will have the opportunity to mono-print with watercolour onto un-carved woodblocks and to explore resist methods of printing with a hand baren. You can also experiment with the possibilities of suminagashi paper marbling and of sumi ink and brush on mulberry paper, to create combinations of some or all of the techniques within your scroll format. Inspiration can be gathered before arriving on the course or in the landscape surrounding Bridge House Art. The week will take the form of a combination of step by step demonstrations alongside time and space to create the content. You will be guided through learning to make the traditional structure of the hand scroll, beginning with paper backing linens to create book cloth and using a saw and chisel to create the dowel for the scroll. Later you will stretch your paper and attach your images together to make the interior of the scroll. This course will suit those of you who enjoy a mix of technical guidance and the freedom to create the content you wish, resulting in a stunning structure to house your artwork.
