Lily Kaa

I come from Nelson, a small sunny town in New Zealand.

I became interested in art around age eleven and found a sense of peace in drawing and painting. I find you can translate the magic in the everyday through art and it has always felt like something I was meant to do.

My focus in painting is the surreal in the real. I am attracted to bright colours, dramatic scenes, figures, flowers and movement.

Creating art has always been a very important and personal thing for me, though I struggle to make time and space for it. The Bridge House Art course has given me the space and freedom to explore my language with paint and I am so grateful for the amazing support from the tutors and the rest of the group. This course has gifted me a stronger sense of confidence and creative freedom.

Personal Statement

For this exhibition, my overarching theme is light - inner light and outer light. Over the break, as I was gathering source material, I found myself in nightclub and raves. I find in nightclubs, when you are bathed in the fluorescent neon lights, you let yourself go. Releasing energy and feeling free, the inner light is captured in the flashing outer lights. I’m trying to convey release – energy and movement.

I hope when you look at my paintings you feel the freedom, the friction and release that I feel in the early hours of the morning dancing away.
