Lilian Öhman

I am originally Finnish but have lived in Sweden for the past thirteen years. In 2017, I attended a course called “Drawing on the right side of the brain” and since then, I have attended several different art courses. The Bridge House Art Portfolio Course has helped me to pull together my previous learnings and clarify my direction as an artist. It has also been a revelation to what it means to do serious artistic work and related research.

Personal Statement

In my work, I mix a fine art approach with craft. I have great admiration for traditional craftsmanship, in all its forms. I also perceive that in today’s world there is an obsession towards machine-like perfection and I resist that.

For this exhibition, my inspiration is pines and birches, the trees that grow everywhere in my home countries, Finland and Sweden. The works are explorations of texture and materials using wire and recycled cardboard to create an imaginary forest.

My methods are process-driven, an ongoing response to what is happening with the pieces, rather than an attempt to control the end result.

The trees are named after dryads, the nymphs attached to specific trees in Greek mythology.
