Course Information

The coastline and interior of the landscape around Ullapool is rich in imagery, the mountains act as magnet for our eyes and on a bright day the light glitters on the water, dwellings rest in fields or along the busy village shorefront and the daily ferry to the western isles along with working boats give essential life to islands. All this is subject matter and the aim of the course will be to distil what it is that catches your eye and your curiosity. By using drawing, listening, quietness and direct observation of the place you will gather imagery to develop in the studio. The course will be a balance of activity preparing a medium scale canvas with texture and colour to imbue the substrate with a particular atmosphere of place and building an image on top based on your observed drawings. From this point you will use the reduction method of oil painting pushing and pulling the image to life as both the on and off mark vie for attention. The process will embrace change as part of the decision making giving each a way into a deeper recognition of place. The course will suit people with experience of drawing out in the landscape and who are willing to work intuitively to develop an image that is imbued with a personal spirit of place.
