Course Information

Humans have a long and complex relationship with trees. They provide us with many resources including timber, paper, charcoal, rubber, medicines, and an extensive array of foods from maple syrup to fruits, nuts, and spices. Trees reduce erosion and moderate the climate. They are also a rich source for metaphors: tree of knowledge; putting down roots; family tree; olive branch; strong as an oak; deadwood – to name but a few. It’s little wonder they have been worshipped by many cultures. During the Trees course, we will use a unique combination of creative writing and expressive art to explore our physical, metaphorical, and spiritual relationships with these extraordinary plants. The course is co-tutored by author LG Thomson and artist Eleanor White and will suit those new to art or writing as well as those experienced in both.
