Course Information

Both the following statements are taken from the internet as the suggested meaning of the word palimpsest: something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form and a palimpsest landscape is one where, in any given region, the different landforms that make up the landscape are not of the same age, with some surface landforms being very young because they are being shaped at the present time. This course will challenge our ideas of building an image. It will concentrate on lost and found marks, the nature of building one image on top of the next, surfaces, one on top of the other, layering the history of your own personal enquiry using words, drawing and colour. It will use one large scale canvas to explore this so that day by day the surfaces of yesterday will be partially eliminated to make way for new thoughts, images, and methods of application. There may not be an end but a series of beginnings, the last passage or image being shaped by the present time. The course will encourage you to think not just in two dimensions but to think how you could attach or collage to the surface of your canvas that will give both spatial and physical depth. Gathering images directly from the landscape and from objects found in the landscape and in the studio will lead and guide you through the creative process with the expressed aim to explore marks that build an image, colour that gives character and surface texture that arrives by osmosis to give you a personal palimpsest. An ideal opportunity for those who want to experiment with mixed media, scale and mark-making.
