Playing in Silver weekend workshop

11th & 12th February 2017
Tutor: Merlin Planterose
2 days: Saturday and Sunday. 9.30 - 4.30
Cost: £160

This course give you the chance to work in this beautiful and versatile material in a relaxed setting and with no expectation or pressure to produce a wearable piece of jewellery. Come and play with the material, explore its properties and push it to its limits.

Starting with some simple drawing techniques we will capture some textures and patterns from the surrounding environment. Then working with these as inspiration, we will explore the potential for repeating these patterns and textures with silver, developing the work naturally, creating little samples.

A design for a piece of jewellery may appear from this, or a mini sculpture or you may wish to keep exploring, learn more techniques and produce more samples. Initially working in copper we will quickly move onto silver, where you will have access to sheet silver, wires and chains.

We will work with a number of techniques including soldering, sawing, drilling and a lot of hammering! This course will also include a session on riveting and hinges.  This class is designed to suit absolute beginners and those with a little more experience, especially those who have worked in copper before but want to move on to silver. Go to Merlin's website to learn more about her and her work.

All courses run from 9.30am - 4.30pm. All materials and equipment are supplied, with a simple lunch provided daily. It is important to wear old clothes as art is a messy business. Be prepared and dress for the Highland weather, expect sun and rain, four seasons have been experienced in one day! Outdoor, waterproof clothing is essential.
