Observation and Expression in Oils

24th - 28th July, 2017
Tutor: Kenneth Le Riche
Course Fee: £360
Fully Booked!

We are delighted to welcome Kenneth back onto the teaching team at Bridge House Art after a number years of travelling and teaching abroad. Please see our teaching page for more information about him. On this course students will use the entire week working with oil paints out and about in Ullapool and the surrounding area.

To begin with, an empirical observant approach will be encouraged where students will take care to look. As the week progresses, a more passionate and individually expressive approach to painting will be developed. This will happen naturally as students use the oil paint more and more vigorously as an unrestrained record of their own process.

It will be an opportunity for students to enjoy getting involved in pushing oil paints around to depict their personal experience of the landscape. Colour, composition, mark-making, texture, and viscosity, will be looked at throughout the week as well as a number of artists as guiding lights such as Van Gogh, Chaim Soutine, early Hopper, Corinth, Kokoschka and Tai Shan Schierenberg amongst others.

All summer school courses run from 9.30am - 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. All materials and equipment are supplied, with a simple lunch provided daily. It is important to wear old clothes as art is a messy business. Be prepared and dress for the Highland weather, expect sun and rain, four seasons have been experienced in one day! Outdoor, waterproof clothing is essential.
